"Providing quality early childhood learning and care for over 40 years"
Our program is nature inspired and play based, incorporating philosophies such as Reggio Emillia and Waldorf. (see links on link page for more info.) We spend a large portion of our day outdoors rain or shine, where children are able to expand their learning activities beyond the confines of the classroom. We believe children thrive with the security of an established routine that also remains flexible and open to their changing needs and interests.
Centennial Daycare opens at 7.30 am and closes at 5.30 pm.
Our schedule is flexible and is adjusted according to the children's daily needs, and by following their lead.. We follow the same rhythm and structure each day so children know exactly what to expect, and clearly know what is coming up next.
7:30 The centre opens. Children have a choice of all available activities such as self-help art, play dough, puzzles, blocks, dramatic play, books. They are free to explore, interact and create their own learning experiences with the support and guidance of friends and staff.
Drop-in morning snack is available at approx. 8.00/8.15 and children are given the opportunity to come as they choose throughout the morning.
As children naturally wind up their play and finish activities, which happens generally between 9.30-10.00, we gradually clean up, use the washroom and transition to outside. We embark on neighbourhood walks, visit local playgrounds, or spend time in our own outside play environment, with sand/water play, gardening, building with loose parts and materials and much more.
Between 11.15 and 11.30 we usually find children are ready to begin winding down their outside active play and begin transitioning to a gathering circle and lunch time. Lunch time is a community event with peers, and we serve
fresh veggies alongside the children's own lunch.
We are all ready for a well earned and needed rest and nap time after lunch. Children visit the washroom and brush teeth, before a quiet self-directed reading time and nap. All children are usually on their mats by 12.30.
The children are quietly woken up at 2.00 and they assist in putting away any quiet rest time activities if they did not sleep, and they slowly head to the wash room.
The afternoon is filled with open-ended art and exploratory play, with a mid afternoon snack being served as the children request and need. This is often outside on a blanket in the warmer months.
A gradual transition occurs to outside play on our deck, and in the colder months they are brought back in at around 5.00 for table activities and books until picked up. The centre closes promptly at 5.30.
Our children also enjoy as a special addition to our regular routines:
Every other Thursday afternoon we welcome Eden Oliver, a professional musician, and trained teacher. Eden leads an inclusive music circle with instruments, songs, movement and games. The children are introduced to and develop concepts such as rhythm and beat, memory skills, balance and spacial awareness while participating in a fun, upbeat circle time!
